transportation. Construction of Patna Junction began in 1855 and was completed in 1862, named as Bankipur. Two railway lines were built from Bankipur to Deegh Ghat and Patna Ghat, connecting Varanasi and Kolkata. The train was initially pulled by animals. Patna's strategic commercial importance led to the construction of the Patna Railway Station, connecting Deegh Ghat and Patna Ghat for goods transportation. Later, work began on laying railway tracks between Patna and Howrah, and Patna and Varanasi. To facilitate smooth goods transportation and passenger travel, the British started constructing railway bridges across major rivers to establish a railway line between Patna and Howrah and Patna and Varanasi. In 1862, a 1.44 km long rail-road bridge was completed and inaugurated on 4th November, 1862. Similarly, a 554-meter long rail bridge was completed in 1861 over the Punpun and Kiul rivers near Fatuha. Within a few years, goods transportation from Patna began by train. The construction of the Rajendra Setu near Hathi Dah, Mokama, was started in 1856 to connect South Bihar and North Bihar by rail. It was completed in 1860. Before independence, the East Indian Railway introduced the Lal Quila Express for the general public. This train made its first trip in 1866 but initially, public travel was not allowed. Later, it was opened to the public. It had third and second-class compartments and travelled at a slow pace, stopping at 67 stations, reaching Delhi from Howrah in approximately 40 hours. It was discontinued on June 30, 2014. The British initially started the rail service for goods transportation and security purposes and not for the general public. Passenger train services were gradually introduced later. Before independence, the Maharaja of Darbhanga started a private rail service for his own travel. After independence, the Janata Express, consisting of only third-class compartments, was launched on October 1st, 1948, running from Patna to Delhi. Later, this train was extended to Howrah and it started running from Howrah to Delhi via Patna. Due to its slow speed, it was discontinued on August 1st, 2014. The Patna-Gaya railway line was constructed to connect the Grand Chord line from Patna to Gaya. This line was used to transport goods and later, passenger trains from Patna to Gaya and Ranchi started operating. The entire line was electrified in 2003 and double-tracked as well. The Danapur Railway Division was established in 1925 to control the trains running on the Eastern Railway. Its building was completed in Danapur in 1928. At that time, Danapur Railway Division was started along with Howrah, Visakhapatnam, and Sealdah. It was under the East Indian Railway from 1925 to 1952, under the Eastern Railway from 1952 to 2002, and then under East Central Railway after its establishment in 2002. More than 300 long-distance and passenger trains pass through Patna Junction every day.
