Plus i have been using mandi house roundabout from last 6 yrs now, and i have seen that roundabout going from green to dustbowl and back to better than ever. DMRC not only does the work with efficiency but also returns the same area back to its original form. And yes kudos to NDMC too for making sure that the green belt of the Mandihouse and ITO area is not affected.

Very true. Five years earlier I used to travel Vasant Kunj - Hauz Khas - South Ex - Vasant Kunj on almost every weekday. 60% of the entire road width from Hauz Khas till the famous AIIMS flyover on Sir Aurobindo Marg was dug up for construction of the yellow line but the traffic never stopped, it only slowed down. And once it all got over, (within a couple of years), the route got reconstructed way better than how it used to be. You take away the efforts of DMRC, Delhi loses half the grandeur it currently boasts of. (You take away CWG, it loses the other half as well :P )

This excuse is being given for a long time and now people assume it to be true. The metro is possible even beneath the sea. Please check what was the original cost of the elevated Versova-Andheri-Ghatkopar and what was the final amount spent on it. Also, when land acquisition causes decades of delay in the projects, thereby increasing the cost exponentially, it is a better idea to start underground metro project and finish it in the original timeline.

costs escalate way too much that way. Underground metro is around 600 crore/km while over ground (elevated) its less than 150 crore per km. Even when you factor in escalation due to delays in land acquisition, it makes sense to go for elevated line (and make nearly everyone suffer while waiting/giving compensation) than underground. This underground cost vs elevated-linked problems is what's jeopardising phase 2 of mumbai metro, which is sad when you consider how effective phase one has been.
Under sea is no good, it would end up being north south in direction, and for north south travel our very WR/CR is more than sufficient.

According to you underground metro is 4 times costlier than elevated metro. But since elevated metro needs land acquisition and that comes after much delay thereby directly increasing the cost. Also, a lot of people have to suffer (wastage of fuel, wastage of man hours, noise and air pollution - all because of long and regular traffic jams every day on the metro construction route) for a long time. If this cost is calculated, underground metro will be much cheaper because it will be possible to complete the work in time.
Can anyone please tell how much was the original cost for Versova - Andheri - Ghatkopar? And how much was the final project cost?

question is not about underground or elevated. The question is how governments in Mumbai killed metro projects in last 60 years. Mumbai definitely could have got a better mass transport system. If we keep on repeating the same mistakes, how can we have a world class metro system for entire Mumbai. Most of the people have seen the Delhi metro take shape and evolve over last decade. Why we can't achieve the same in Mumbai?
