Metro project viability: Month after UMTA meeting, Chandigarh admn still sitting on readying minutes

The Chandigarh administration is facing delays in finalizing the minutes of the Unified Metro Transportation Authority (UMTA) meeting held on September 2nd. This delay is hindering the assessment of the financial viability of the proposed Metro system by Rail India Technical and Economic Services (RITES), which requires the meeting proceedings to...

complete their analysis. RITES has also indicated that a full assessment will take at least a month. Meanwhile, the Punjab government has secured forest clearance and will soon allocate 45 acres in New Chandigarh for the construction of a Metro depot. This resolves a two-month delay caused by the lack of forest clearance. The depot was originally planned for Zirakpur, but the Punjab government refused to provide land there, leading to the selection of an alternative location in Sector 27, Panchkula. The proposed Metro system, estimated to cost ₹24,000 crore, will be implemented in two phases, with the first phase expected to be completed by 2032. The first phase includes three routes, covering a total of 85.65 km, with a portion of the route being underground in heritage sectors.

Chandigarh administration abhi tak September 2 ko huye UMTA meeting ke minutes finalize nahin kar paya hai. Isse RITES ko Metro system ke financial viability ka assessment karne mein dikkat aa rahi hai, kyunki unhe meeting proceedings ki zaroorat hai. RITES ne bhi kaha hai ki assessment karne mein kam...

se kam ek month lagega. Iske saath hi, Punjab government ko forest clearance mil gaya hai aur woh jaldi hi New Chandigarh mein Metro depot banane ke liye 45 acres land allocate karega. Yeh forest clearance na milne ki wajah se aaye 2 mahine ke delay ko khatam karta hai. Depot pehle Zirakpur mein banne wala tha, lekin Punjab government ne land dene se mana kar diya, jisse Sector 27, Panchkula mein alternative location chuna gaya. Metro system ka estimated cost ₹24,000 crore hai aur yeh do phases mein banaya jayega, pehla phase 2032 tak complete hone ki ummid hai. Pehle phase mein teen routes hain, jo total 85.65 km cover karenge, jismein heritage sectors mein kuchh route underground honge.

These days, every other day, we are getting requests from members to allow email login to their FB-based IRI account. 10 years ago, we had given the option for users to login through FaceBook - in retrospect, this was a mistake. These days, apparently, users are quitting FaceBook in droves because...
