WDM-3A #16577R, rolled out from DLW Banaras On 28 Feb 1994 under the ALCO (American Locomotive Company) license, represents one of the many locomotives that were once the backbone of Indian Railways' diesel operations. This Locomotive, however, has been condemned, meaning it has reached the end of its operational life and is no longer in service. Currently, it remains inside the premises of the Mughalsarai Diesel Loco Shed, symbolizing its former role in hauling passenger and freight trains. The locomotive may still be standing in the yard due to procedural delays in scrapping or awaiting further orders regarding its disposal.

Journey: The locomotive was in service for several decades, performing a variety of tasks for the Mughalsarai (now Pt. Deen Dayal Upadhyaya) Division, one of the busiest railway divisions in India. Known for its reliability and durability, it contributed to the movement of freight and passenger traffic in the region, especially in non-electrified zones. However, with the ongoing electrification drive across Indian Railways, many such diesel locomotives have been rendered obsolete.

Reasons for Condemnation: WDM-3A 16577R was condemned due to a combination of factors:

1. Age and Wear: After years of service, the locomotive would have accumulated significant wear and tear. As locomotives age, their maintenance becomes costlier, and the efficiency of operations declines.

2. Technological Obsolescence: With the shift towards electrification and the introduction of newer, more fuel-efficient diesel locomotives (like the WDG-4 and WDP-4 series), older ALCO models have been gradually retired.

The loco is essentially a relic now, a silent witness to the era of diesel dominance on Indian Railways.
While it no longer roars on the tracks, 16577R serves as a memory of the time when the ALCOs ruled the railway network. Locomotive enthusiasts often view such condemned locos with a sense of nostalgia, recognizing their significant contributions to the country's transportation history.

These days, every other day, we are getting requests from members to allow email login to their FB-based IRI account. 10 years ago, we had given the option for users to login through FaceBook - in retrospect, this was a mistake. These days, apparently, users are quitting FaceBook in droves because...
