Bengaluru Metro Phase 2 delay raises cost to Rs 40000 crore

The cost of Bengaluru Metro's Phase-2 network, spanning 75.06 km, has increased to almost Rs 40,000 crore, a 52% hike from the initial estimate proposed a decade ago. The Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (BMRCL) recently submitted a revised cost proposal to the State Finance Department for approval through the Urban...

Development Department (UDD). Initially approved in 2014 for 72 km (later expanded to 75.06 km) at a cost of Rs 26,405 crore, the project was slated for completion by 2019. By 2021, the cost had already risen to Rs 30,695 crore. This revised cost excludes the Outer Ring Road Line (Phase-2A) and the Airport Line from KR Pura to KIA (Phase-2B). The escalation is attributed to increased land acquisition costs, the inclusion of additional kilometers, inflation, pandemic-related delays, and fluctuations in international currencies, resulting in a nearly Rs 10,000 crore rise from the previous estimate. The BMRCL proposal has been forwarded to the Finance Department. A senior official attributed the major cost escalation to the original delay in project completion, emphasizing that the pandemic's impact exacerbated the situation. Land acquisition delays are also cited as a significant contributing factor. The BMRCL extended the Reach-2 line on the West from Kengeri to Challaghatta and added a depot on the eastern side at Kadugodi (Whitefield). This expansion required acquiring an additional 44 hectares of land, increasing the compensation component to nearly Rs 6,300 crore, a Rs 438 crore rise from the original estimate. BMRCL has acquired 128.36 hectares of land, surpassing the initial plan of 84.33 hectares. The BMRCL has also undertaken road-widening work near several stations, including the stretch from Baiyappanahalli to Kadugodi and Yelachenahalli to Silk Institute. Additional land was also acquired for the Reach-5 line (R V Road-Bommasandra). Following approval from the Finance Department, the proposal will be submitted to the Centre's Urban Development department.

Bengaluru Metro ke Phase-2 network ka cost, jo ki 75.06 km tak chalta hai, almost Rs 40,000 crore tak badh gaya hai, yeh 10 saal pehle diye gaye original cost se 52% zyada hai. Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (BMRCL) ne recently revised cost ka proposal State Finance Department ko Urban...

Development Department (UDD) ke through approval ke liye bheja hai. 2014 mein yeh project 72 km (baad mein 75.06 km tak badhaya gaya) ke liye Rs 26,405 crore ki cost pe approve hua tha, aur yeh 2019 tak complete hone wala tha. 2021 tak, cost Rs 30,695 crore tak badh gaya tha. Isme Outer Ring Road Line (Phase-2A) aur KR Pura se KIA tak ka Airport Line (Phase-2B) include nahi hai. Cost badhne ka reason land acquisition cost badhna, extra kilometers add karna, inflation, pandemic ki wajah se delay aur international currencies mein fluctuation hain, isse pehle ke estimate se almost Rs 10,000 crore ka badhaav aaya hai. BMRCL ka proposal Finance Department ko bhej diya gaya hai. Ek senior official ne yeh bataya ki project me delay hi cost badhne ka main reason hai, aur unhone yeh bhi bataya ki pandemic ne situation ko aur bhi kharab kar diya. Land acquisition mein delay bhi ek important factor hai. BMRCL ne West mein Reach-2 line ko Kengeri se Challaghatta tak extend kiya hai aur east side par Kadugodi (Whitefield) mein ek depot add kiya hai. Is expansion ke liye extra 44 hectare land acquire kiya gaya hai, jisse compensation component almost Rs 6,300 crore tak badh gaya, yeh original estimate se Rs 438 crore zyada hai. BMRCL ne 128.36 hectare land acquire kiya hai, jo ki 84.33 hectare ke original plan se zyada hai. BMRCL ne kuch stations ke paas road-widening ka kaam bhi kiya hai, jisme Baiyappanahalli se Kadugodi aur Yelachenahalli se Silk Institute tak ka stretch bhi include hai. Reach-5 line (R V Road-Bommasandra) ke liye bhi extra land acquire kiya gaya hai. Finance Department se approval ke baad, yeh proposal Centre ke Urban Development department ko bheja jayega.
