While facing opposition from Karnataka on environmental grounds, K-Rail has proposed a new design for the Nilambur-Nanchankode route, avoiding the National Park and Bandipur Tiger Sanctuary. The plan involves converging the Nilambur-Nanchankode and Thalassery-Mysore routes at Kalpatta and passing through an underground tunnel in Karnataka. K-Rail has also expressed interest in constructing the Sabari rail route. In collaboration with Rail Vikas Nigam Limited, K-Rail has been awarded a contract to install an automatic block signalling system on the Ernakulam South-Vallathol Nagar rail route, which is a first for Kerala. The project is expected to be completed within 750 days. Meanwhile, the Silver Line project is on hold with an expenditure of 65.72 crores.
