The revised proposal for this service was approved on December 28, 2023, by the Eastern Railway's Chief Transport Planning Manager, AK Satpathy, and sent to the East Central Railway administration. The exact commencement date is yet to be announced. The new Patna-Dumka Intercity train will depart daily from Patna at 6:40 AM, reaching Kiul at 8:52 AM, Jamalpur at 10:00 AM, Bhagalpur at 11:05 AM, and Dumka at 1:30 PM. The return journey starts from Dumka at 2:05 PM, arriving in Bhagalpur at 4:32 PM, Jamalpur at 5:30 PM, Kiul at 7:03 PM, and reaching Patna at 9:45 PM. The train will also stop at smaller stations like Abhayapur, Sultan Ganj, and Barahat. The initiative to extend the Ganga Damodar Express to Dumka was driven by the demand from Munger MLA, Pranav Kumar, who had previously requested the East Central Railway (Hajipur) administration to operate the train to either Bhagalpur or Dumka. The East Central Railway had granted approval, but final clearance was pending from the Eastern Railway (Kolkata). On December 28, 2023, the Eastern Railway's General Manager, Amar Prakash Dwivedi, granted the necessary approval after a meeting in Kolkata. This will ensure that the Ganga Damodar Express is effectively utilized, benefiting residents of Jamalpur, Munger, Bhagalpur, and Dumka, as well as those from 14 districts. The Eastern Railway's Chief Public Relations Officer (CPRO), Kaushik Mitra, confirmed that an Intercity train service between Patna and Dumka was requested, and the East Central and Eastern Railway administrations approved the utilization of the Ganga Damodar Express train for this purpose.
