As a precursor to the strike, railway employees will hold a hunger strike from 8th to 11th January in cities like Jaipur, Delhi, Gorakhpur, and Izzatnagar, among others. If the government fails to reinstate the OPS after the hunger strike, a nationwide strike will be initiated following a notice to the government. The decision to hold a nationwide strike was discussed at the annual conventions of the North Western Railway Employees Union and the North Eastern Railway Labour Union. The 63rd annual convention of the North Eastern Railway Labour Union also saw the re-election of K.L. Gupta as General Secretary for the 63rd time and Basant Lal Chaturvedi as Central President for the 10th time.
