TRAIN TRAVEL IN EUROPE: ITALY
I recently had a chance to take the Italian high speed rail branded as Frecciarossa by TrenItalia. I traveled on the Milan - Venice, Venice - Florence, Florence - Rome and Florence - Milan sectors.
The...
more... competition to the partially-state owned TrenItalia is Italo - NTV which is privately owned. (Rakes used by Italo have a very interesting design where one boogie was shared between two cars, there's a picture out here)
The Frecciarossa trains are tested on speeds of 300kmph and above (based on the rake type). Operations on all the sectors i travelled on were limited to 250kmph.
There are several classes of travel and the pricing is very reasonable (at least for someone with the context of American railroad pricing). I paid between the range of тВм20 - тВм40 per sector across Business Class and Premium Economy class. It's variable, divided into fare classes most of which are non-refundable.
My Milan - Venice train ran into a service breakdown because of which it was delayed by 35 minutes. I got an email mentioning the policy where a traveller is entitled to a 25% refund for a delay between 30-59 minutes. Before I left my destination station, the refund was credited to me.
The best run was between Rome and Florence, the train ripped across the distance of 277kms in just about 1h20m, hitting 250kmph for most of it. It's the fastest run on a train that I've so far been on.

There's also this other company called Italo - NTV that competes with TrenItalia. Italo is privately owned and their trains have this cool design where one boogie is shared between two cars (you can find a pic online).
The Frecciarossa trains can go up to speeds of 300kmph and above (depending on the type of train). But the ones I took were cruising at 250kmph.
There are different classes you can choose from and the prices are pretty reasonable (especially compared to the ridiculous prices of American railroads). I paid around тВм20 - тВм40 per trip for Business Class or Premium Economy. The prices vary though and most of them are non-refundable.
On my Milan - Venice trip, we hit some trouble...

(Italo ke trainon ki ek hat ke design bahut interesting hai, ek boogie do cars ke beech mein taqseem hota hai, ek picture yahan hai)
Frecciarossa trains ki speed 300kmph aur us se bhi zyada (rake type par depend karke) test ki jaati hain. Lekin jahaan tak meri yatra thi, woh saare sectors par 250kmph tak hi chal rahi thi.
Kayi classes of travel hain aur pricing bhi bilkul reasonable hai (kam se kam American railroad pricing pe context rakhte hue). Main тВ╣20 - тВ╣40 tak pay kiya har sector ke liye Business Class aur Premium Economy class mein. Pricing mein variables hain aur fare classes mein divide kiya gaya hai, jismein se zyadatar non-refundable hote hai.
Mera Milan se Venice wala train service breakdown mein phas gaya, isi wajah se wo 35 minutes late hua. Mujhe ek email aaya jismein policy batai gayi thi ki agar train 30-59 minutes late ho gayi hai to mujhe 25% refund mil sakta hai.
