Passengers taking the Chennai Egmore–Tuticorin Pearl City Express and Chennai Egmore–Kanyakumari Express next month will see a noticeable change in the coaches of the train. It will have a new exterior, and better, odourless toilets with health faucets, stainless steel basins and dustbins.
The Southern Railway has identified these two popular trains for an upgrade as part of the railways project Utkrisht.
In order to improve the condition of coaches in mail/ express trains, the ministry of railways decided to upgrade the 140 coaches running in 66 pairs of trains. For this upgrade, ₹60 lakh a rake was allocated in the 2018-19 budget. The upgrade covers onboard cleanliness, coach interiors, toilets, exteriors and pantry cars. The Southern Railway had identified six trains with ten rakes for the phase-I upgrade, which was executed in three nominated workshops.
Trains also seeing an upgrade are Coimbatore–Nizamuddin Kongu Express, Trivandrum–Nizamuddin Superfast Express, Tiruchchirappalli–Howrah Express, Mangalore–Trivandrum Maveli Express and Chennai-–Sengottai Silambu Express. The upgrade of Silambu Express was launched two days ago. R K Kulshrestha, general manager of Southern Railway, along with principal heads of department, conducted an inspection at the Perambur Carriage & Wagon Works on Thursday and reviewed the progress of Utkrisht.
