Because standard gauge has had a history of failure in IR for heavy rail. All heavy Standard Gauge Rail lines British constructed in India were faliures.
Broad Gauge has lower centre of gravity so it is more safer and also allows higher speeds than standard gauge. More people can be accommodated in broad gauge coaches so cheaper ticket fares.
Also whenever an emergency comes and HSR rail lines have to be used, there will be difficulties with standard gauge.
