एक्सप्रेस के लोको पायलट, गुणनिधि मोहंती और हजारी बेहरा, एक साल बाद भी अपने कर्तव्यों पर वापस नहीं आ सके हैं, क्योंकि उन्हें बहुत बड़ा मानसिक और शारीरिक आघात लगा था। दोनों पायलट अब काम पर जा सकते हैं, लेकिन अभी भी ठीक हो रहे हैं। रेलवे सुरक्षा आयुक्त (CRS) की रिपोर्ट ने दुर्घटना के लिए दोषपूर्ण सिग्नलिंग को जिम्मेदार ठहराया, जो खराब मरम्मत कार्यों के कारण हुआ था, और बताया कि यदि बार-बार होने वाली गड़बड़ियों को पहले ही दूर कर दिया जाता तो दुर्घटना को रोका जा सकता था। मामला सीबीआई को सौंप दिया गया, जिसने 3 रेलवे अधिकारियों को गिरफ्तार किया। सीबीआई ने आरोप पत्र दायर कर दिया है, लेकिन उसके बाद कोई प्रगति नहीं हुई है। भारतीय रेलवे ने सुरक्षा के लिए कुछ पहल की हैं, जैसे कि सुरक्षा अभियान, निरीक्षण, सेमिनार, परिपत्र, ऑडिट और एनडीआरएफ के साथ मॉक अभ्यास। स्टेशनों का स्वतंत्र सुरक्षा ऑडिट भी किया गया, और अब तक 40 स्टेशनों की जाँच की जा चुकी है।
