Indian Railways is planning to reduce the speed of premium trains like Vande Bharat and Gatiman Express from 160 kmph to 130 kmph on certain routes due to safety concerns. This decision was made after a recent accident involving the Kanchanjunga Express in West Bengal. The North Central Railway proposed the...

speed reduction, citing the failure of the Train Protection & Warning System (TPWS) on the Delhi-Agra-Jhansi routes. While the Railway Board is expected to approve the proposal, former officials like Shubhranshu, the mastermind behind Vande Bharat Express, criticized the decision, arguing that reducing speed without addressing the root cause of the TPWS malfunction is not a viable solution. They believe that focusing on proper maintenance of high-tech signaling equipment and tracks is crucial for enabling safe high-speed train operations.

Indian Railways jaldi hi premium trains jaise ki Vande Bharat aur Gatiman Express ki speed 160 kmph se kam karke 130 kmph karne wala hai, yeh bhi kuchh routes pe, safety ke liye. Yeh decision West Bengal mein Kanchanjunga Express ka accident hone ke baad liya gaya. North Central Railway ne...

yeh speed kam karne ka proposal diya hai, kyunki Delhi-Agra-Jhansi routes pe Train Protection & Warning System (TPWS) fail ho gaya tha. Railway Board ke is proposal ko approve karne ki ummeed hai, par ex-officials jaise ki Shubhranshu, jo Vande Bharat Express ke peeche dimag hain, yeh decision ko criticize kar rahe hain, unka kehna hai ki speed kam karke root cause of TPWS malfunction ko address nahi kiya ja raha hai, yeh solution nahi hai. Unka belief hai ki high-tech signalling equipment aur tracks ka proper maintenance karna jaruri hai, taki safe high-speed train operations ho sake.

I agree.

According to some recent discussions in the forum, it is a temporary step, until the long awaited , so called "kavach installation" on 160 kmph routes. track-fitted RFID tags shall be used for communicating an upcoming signal in and level crossing in driver cabin. Also ,There have been recent instances of Gatimaan running way over PSR at places.
...

However, I still regard it as a retrograde step. Despite field trials between 2015-2017 and live demonstration in 2022 , It seems kavach installation has not been done on routes with trains running at 160kmph . None of the recent rail accidents (except in Balasore one) were trains running at 110 or 130 kmph , let alone 160 .

Some issues have been plaguing IR for long - Lack of proper fencing, lack of adequate security system, lack of R&D in improvement of rail security, huge vacancies - They are trying to brush these under the carpet by reducing speed in name of risk mitigation .

Quoting from the above article -"we were not able to run trains at 160 kmph because the track was not safe to operate at that speed. Unless the organisation is culturally ready to maintain high-tech signalling equipment, high-speed tracks and rolling stock, no matter what trains we buy or make, we will be constrained to run at lower speed only."

It is more of a coverup exercise - issues like lack of adequate high-tech signalling equipment, high-speed tracks , maintainance issues, long working hours of LPs and ALPs , snail's pace progress on installation of anti collision systems - they are trying to divert attention from these issues by reducing speed in name of "risk mitigation and security measures". God forbid , but accidents can happen, and, have happened in the past at even lower speeds .

Indian Railways has announced changes in the timings of some of its key trains, including Gatimaan Express, Vande Bharat Express, and Shatabdi Express services operating between major cities. These adjustments are being implemented due to ongoing safety enhancement projects like boundary wall construction and the Train Protection & Warning System (TPWS)...

installation. These projects are anticipated to continue for a few years and have been prompted by recent safety concerns. This decision will likely impact the 160 km/h upgrade on the Western Railway (WR) and West Central Railway (WCR) lines. The Ministry of Railways has reviewed the maximum operating speed of these trains, reducing it from 160 km/h to 130 km/h, prioritizing safety and reliability. The changes will affect the following services: Gatimaan Express (New Delhi to Jhansi), NDLS-RKMP Shatabdi Express (New Delhi to Bhopal), Vande Bharat Express (New Delhi to Khajuraho), and Vande Bharat Express (New Delhi to Bhopal). These changes are part of a comprehensive safety enhancement initiative by Indian Railways. The speed reduction is attributed to the boundary wall construction and TPWS installation, crucial for preventing accidents and ensuring safe train operations. The changes are expected to benefit passengers through enhanced safety, improved punctuality, and reduced maintenance concerns associated with high-speed travel. Passengers are advised to consult updated schedules before planning their journeys. The changes are anticipated to be implemented in the coming weeks, with detailed information available on the Indian Railways website and major stations.

Indian Railways ne apne kuchh mukhya trains ke timings mein badlaav ki ghoshna ki hai. Yeh badlaav Gatimaan Express, Vande Bharat Express, aur Shatabdi Express services ko affect karenge, jo mukhya shaharon ke beech chalti hain. Yeh timings mein badlaav railway ki suraksha badhane ke liye boundary wall construction aur Train...

Protection & Warning System (TPWS) kaam ke karan kiye ja rahe hain, aur yeh kaam aage aane waale kuchh saalon tak chalne ki sambhavna hai. Yeh badlaav Western Railway (WR) aur West Central Railway (WCR) mein 160 km/h ki upgrade par bhi prabhaav daal sakte hain. Yeh badlaav in services ko affect karenge: Gatimaan Express (New Delhi se Jhansi), NDLS-RKMP Shatabdi Express (New Delhi se Bhopal), Vande Bharat Express (New Delhi se Khajuraho), aur Vande Bharat Express (New Delhi se Bhopal). Yeh changes Indian Railways ki comprehensive suraksha badhane ki pahal ka hissa hain. Speed reduction boundary wall construction aur TPWS installation ke karan kiya ja raha hai, jo accidents ko rokne aur train operations ko safe banane ke liye mahatvpurn hain. Yeh badlaav aane waale saalon mein passengers ke liye kaafi faydemand rahenge. Isse suraksha badhegi, punctuality improve hogi, aur high-speed travel se jude maintenance problems kam honge. Yaatriyon ko salah di jaati hai ki woh apna schedule check karke apni journey plan karen. Yeh changes aane waale haftaon mein laagu hone ki ummeed hai, aur detailed information Indian Railways ki website aur mukhya stations par available hogi.

Indian Railways is preparing to introduce a sleeper variant of the Vande Bharat Express trains. This train, designed for long-distance travel, will run at a speed of 200 km per hour. This raises questions about the future of Shatabdi and Rajdhani Express trains, as the high-speed Vande Bharat Express sleeper variant...

could potentially replace them. There are also plans to expand the Vande Bharat network with the introduction of Vande Metro services in Mumbai. Railway officials have confirmed that Vande Bharat Express trains will gradually replace Shatabdi Express trains. The sleeper variant of this semi-high-speed, indigenously-built train is seen as an alternative to the Rajdhani Express trains, which are considered a premium service connecting New Delhi to various state capitals. The growing popularity of Vande Bharat Express trains, along with their world-class amenities and services, has led to plans for expanding their network across the country.

Indian Railways aapne Vande Bharat Express train mein sleeper variant launch karne ki taiyaari kar rahi hai. Yeh train 200 km per hour ki speed se chalegi aur lambi distance ke liye design ki gayi hai. Isse Shatabdi aur Rajdhani Express trains ke future ke bare mein sawal uth rahe hain,...

kyunki high-speed Vande Bharat Express sleeper variant unki jagah le sakta hai. Mumbai mein Vande Metro services ke saath Vande Bharat network ko expand karne ka bhi plan hai. Railway officials ne confirm kiya hai ki Vande Bharat Express trains, Shatabdi Express trains ki jagah le rahi hain. Is semi-high-speed, swadeshi train ke sleeper variant ko Rajdhani Express trains ka alternative maan ja raha hai. Rajdhani Express trains, Indian Railways ki premium service mein se ek hai, jo national capital New Delhi ko various state capitals se jodti hai. Vande Bharat Express trains ki badhti popularity, unke world-class amenities aur services ke saath, unke network ko poora desh mein expand karne ke plan ke piche wajah hai.

I feel that the Shtbs' having short distance travel, like the NDLS CDG (244kms), NDLS Kalka (269kms), NDLS Kathgodam (282kms) should be retained cause having a VB run for these small stretches would be a waste of rake... instead of VB, they can make use of VB Metro (although limit is 200km, but can still run depending on the MPS of those particular trains' sections).... Shtbs' having distance more than 350kms can be thought of either having Shtb or VB rake....

True. VB is beneficial only if distance is atleast above 350 kms. Short distance travellers wont prefer VB much due to higher fare and its not VFM also
