Kavach Version 3.2 has been implemented on approximately 1,465 km of the South Central Railway, covering 133 stations, 29 level crossings, and 150 locomotives. Version 4 is currently being tested and deployed across 3,000 km in the Delhi-Mumbai and Delhi-Kolkata sections. The system's development was initiated by the Research Design and Standards Organisation (RDSO) in Lucknow, following the Anil Kakodkar Committee's recommendation for an advanced signaling system. While Kavach demonstrated its capabilities, its implementation was delayed due to the initial focus on ETCS. The Railway Board later opted for ETCS Level 1 for major routes and Kavach for less important lines. The decision to switch to ETCS Level 2 was made in 2020, but the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted the tender process. The Balasore train accident in June 2023 accelerated the deployment of Kavach, and it is projected that the system could be installed on 10,000 km of main trunk lines within the next seven years, pending the resolution of some technical issues.
