With over 34 years of experience, he has played a crucial role in the construction and maintenance of railway infrastructure, including the world's highest railway bridge, the Chenab Bridge. He was also instrumental in making India an exporter of Track Machine. As the first Principal Executive Director of the Gati Shakti Directorate, he oversaw the planning, sanctioning, and monitoring of projects, leading to a record high commissioning of railway tracks in 2022-23. Khandelwal is also a sports enthusiast, having played basketball at the state level and served as President of the Sports Association of Northern Railway.
