The South Western Railway (SWR) has implemented 'Meri Saheli,' an initiative aimed at ensuring the safety of women traveling alone on trains. Guards accompany RPF personnel to handle emergencies, and 270 Home Guards are currently employed by SWR on a contract basis. Teams of two RPF women and two men are dedicated to ensuring safe travel for women, especially on long-distance trains from major SWR stations like Bengaluru, Hubli, and Belagavi. The RPF also informs stations along the route of the names and coaches of lone female travelers for additional security checks. SWR also employs a system of train escorts involving RPF and Government Railway Police (GRP) for sensitive routes, providing an extra layer of protection for women travelers. On average, 50% of SWR's mail or express trains receive escort support. The SWR has plans to install 2,700 CCTV cameras across 228 stations, adding to the 835 already in place. Additional measures to promote a safe environment for women include designated women-only coaches, proper lighting within railway stations and platforms, and strict action against unauthorized men traveling in women-reserved compartments. Men caught in women-reserved coaches are penalized under section 162 of the Railways Act, with 145 cases and INR 25,500 in fines collected in 2023. Operation 'Nanhe Farishte,' which focuses on the protection of unaccompanied minors within railway premises, has rescued 81 girls and 325 boys in 2023. Other initiatives designed to improve the experience of women include nursing pods for breastfeeding mothers, sanitary pads provided near women's toilets and waiting rooms, and onboard availability of milk or baby formula through ticket checking staff.
