A 6.5-km section from Walajah Road to Ranipet was opened for goods traffic in 2020, and work on the 28.5-km line from Podatturpettai to Sholingur will begin soon. This new line will connect Puducherry via Tindivanam and intersect the Chennai-Katpadi line at Walajah station, ultimately linking with the Chennai Central-Tirupati railway line. The project is expected to transform the rail network by providing an alternative to congested lines. The total land requirement is 726.59 hectares, with 594.10 hectares already acquired. The Railways has provided Rs 577.15 crore for land acquisition. The project cost has escalated significantly since 2007, with the revised estimate now standing at Rs 3,631.34 crore.
