The India Meteorological Department (IMD) announced that a depression is expected to cross the Chennai coast on October 17, bringing heavy to extremely heavy rainfall to Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, Chengalpattu, and Chennai districts. The IMD declared that the system is unlikely to become a cyclone. Tamil Nadu's Deputy Chief Minister, Udhayanidhi Stalin, distributed relief materials to sanitation workers. Chennai and parts of Tamil Nadu received exceptionally heavy rainfall, filling dams rapidly. Cholavaram reservoir received 302.6 mm, Redhills lake received 279.2 mm, and other reservoirs saw varying amounts of rainfall.
