Since 2017, 18 elephants have been killed by trains on the Howrah-Mumbai route, specifically in the Chakradharpur, Kharagpur, and Adra divisions. and Forest Department jointly marked elephant zones along the Chakulia, Chandil, Chaibasa, and Rourkela routes. Locomotive pilots have been instructed to reduce train speeds and honk continuously in elephant zones to prevent train accidents.
