Puri-Konark new railway line to bypass Balukhand sanctuary in Odisha

492 crore, will involve land acquisition of 215.91 hectares and the construction of various bridges and underpasses. The line is expected to be completed within two years. It will feature a two-line station at Konark with an absolute block signalling system for smooth passenger train movement. The project was previously shelved in 2017 due to environmental concerns, but the new alignment avoids these issues. The line is expected to boost tourism in the region, connecting the Sun Temple at Konark with the Shree Jagannath Temple at Puri. The Railway Board has proposed tourist hubs along the line with Vistadome-like train services offering scenic views and augmented reality/virtual reality experiences showcasing Jagannath culture. The Odisha government is expected to contribute 50% of the project cost.
