Over the past few years, SER is taking some serious steps towards developing their infrastructure. Although the zone held the record for highest percentage of electrification in Indian Railways for a long time, and also came in limelight for being the highest passenger revenue earning zone, still it had quite a few drawbacks.. The zone had one of the worst maintained coaching yard, lacked high speed, had only a...
more... handful premium trains, had shortage of modern LHB coaches, infrastructure was poor and delays were common. But to overcome most of the issues, South Eastern Railways decided to complete the construction of third line for the entire Howrah- Kharagpur stretch, started construction of third line from Kharagpur to Tatanagar and beyond, constructing a Sanrail- Andul flyover, and converting Santragachi Junction into a multilevel multipurpose model terminal station.
And now the GM declared that high speed trials will be conducted on the Howrah- Tatanagar stretch to increase the top speed from 110 kmph to 130 kmph. But it was hard to believe. The Howrah Kharagpur stretch runs a fairly long distance through the bank of the Ganges where the ground consists of soft clay. Also the route cuts through numerous rivers, sharp curves and busy market areas and towns. We were not sure..
But we were in for a pleasant surprise, when SER officials actually conducted the trials.. Powered by a SRC WAP-7, high speed 130 kmph COCR (Confirmatory Oscillograph Car Run) RDSO trials were conducted with 24 LHB coaches filles with heavy sand bags.. And not only that, the GM of SER also conducted high speed track Inspections for the route as well.
If everything goes well, we can hope that Kolkata will be getting a shot in the arm, as we will be having two sections with 130 kmph speed. And also the journey time of the premium trains running on the Mumbai Kolkata route can be cut down by 25-40 minutes. Fingers Crossed
