more... Jalpaiguri Shatabdi Express on Saturday morning has again brought to the fore the question of passengers' security .
Two armed criminals robbed gold ornaments and cash worth several lakhs from a jeweller who was travelling to Kolkata from Malda. They fled just as the train stopped at a red signal before entering Jamirghata station.
.
It is being suspected that the gang damaged the signal and forced it to turn red to ensure the train stopped at the designated spot.
.
The jeweller, Sunil Kumar Halder, was taking the gold ornaments to Kolkata for hallmarking. Halder boarded the train from Malda Town station around 8.45am on Saturday . It is still not clear whether the two miscreants were already on the train or boarded it from Malda Town. Jamirghata is 14km from Malda Town and the train doesn't stop there. While entering Jamirghata, the loco pilot noted the red signal and stopped the train.
.
“They pulled out guns and snatched the bag from Halder who was on seat 58 in the C3 coach of the train. They got off the train even before people could react,“ a co-passenger said.
.
Halder's relative said that he chose to travel by the daytime train as he was carrying ornaments worth Rs 10 lakh and wanted to avoid unnecessary attention.
.
“We have started an inquiry based on his complaint. As the area where the miscreants got off is within the limits of Kaliachak police station, we have sought assistance from the police there as well,“ said K G Dutta, inspector in charge of GRP at New Farakka.
