सुटावा, यासाठी कोकण रेल्वेकडून तयार करण्यात आलेला दुहेरी मार्गाचा प्रस्ताव मागील आठवड्यात रेल्वे बोर्डाकडे पाठवण्यात आला असल्याची माहिती कोकण रेल्वेकडून देण्यात आली.
मध्य आणि कोकण रेल्वेमार्गावर एकच मार्ग उपलब्ध असल्याने एखादी दुर्घटना घडल्यास दोन्ही रेल्वेसेवा पूर्णपणे ठप्प होतात. त्यामुळे दुहेरी मार्ग असावा, अशी मागणी प्रवाशांकडून केली जात असून, मध्य आणि कोकण रेल्वेकडून तसे प्रयत्नही केले जात आहेत. मध्य रेल्वेकडून पेण ते कासू आणि कासू ते रोहापर्यंतचे काम हाती घेण्यात आले असून, हे काम लवकरच पूर्ण करण्यावर अधिक भर दिला जात आहे. मात्र कोकण रेल्वेमार्गावर दुहेरीकरणाचा प्रकल्प अजूनही मार्गी लागलेला नसून, त्याचा फक्त प्रस्ताव तयार करण्यात आला होता. कोकण रेल्वेकडून कोलाड ते ठोकूर या ७४१ किलोमीटरच्या मार्गावर दुहेरीकरणाचा प्रस्ताव तयार करण्यात आला असून, रोहा ते करंजाडी आणि बैंदूर ते ठोकूर असे टप्प्याटप्प्यात दुहेरीकरण करण्याचे प्रस्तावात नमूद आहे. हा प्रकल्प पूर्ण करण्यासाठी १,५00 कोटी रुपयांचा खर्च आहे. याबाबत कोकण रेल्वेच्या मुख्य जनसंपर्क अधिकारी वैशाली पतंगे यांना विचारले असता, दुहेरीकरणाचा प्रस्ताव मागील आठवड्यात रेल्वे बोर्डाकडे पाठवण्यात आला आहे. त्यामुळे आता फक्त मंजुरीची प्रतीक्षा करण्यात येत असून त्याला लवकरच मंजुरीही मिळेल, असे त्यांनी सांगितले. मुंबई : रेल्वेमंत्री सुरेश प्रभू यांनी मध्य रेल्वेच्या महाव्यवस्थापकांची भेट घेऊन अनेक प्रकल्पांचा आढावा घेतल्यानंतर कोकण रेल्वेच्या अधिकार्‍यांचीही बैठक घेऊन या मार्गावरील प्रकल्पांचा आढावा घेतला. यामध्ये कोकण रेल्वेच्या विद्युतीकरणाच्या प्रस्तावाला लवकरच मंजुरी देण्याचे आश्‍वासन त्यांनी दिले. प्रभू यांनी कोकण रेल्वेच्या प्रकल्पांचा तसेच प्रवासी सुरक्षेचा आढावा घेतला. कोकण रेल्वेचे अध्यक्ष आणि व्यवस्थापकीय संचालक भानुप्रकाश तायल यांच्याशी बैठक घेत त्यांनी प्रकल्पांवर चर्चाही केली.

project was one of those listed as important and in urgent need of completion in the list made to commemorate 100 days of the Narendra Modi-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government. While the 100-day commemoration was in August, railway officials said the project, despite not being completed by then, got a major fillip after being included in the list.
"It is the work that took place at breakneck speed between July and August which has now given us this 99 per cent complete status. Now permissions from the railway board, the Commissioner of Railway Safety and the Research Design Standards Organisation (RDSO) are left and that should take a couple of months more. We are well within the December 31 deadline," said a top railway official.
The other big issue, the need for rakes that can run on AC traction after the conversion, is also in control with CR officials saying that around 10 such rakes would be needed to service the CST-Thane section.
"We use around 75 rakes to service the CST-Thane section every day. Some 52 are Siemens, around 9 are BHEL ones and some 8 rakes are retrofitted ones. We would require about 10 AC traction rakes which should not be a problem," said an official.
The project would allow CR to deploy Alternating Current suburban locals which could run at 100 kilometres per hour, thus allowing train-runners to squeeze in more trains into the timetable. It will also give almost 33 per cent energy savings and power bill savings of anything between Rs50-80 crore annually, said officials.
At a cost of Rs1,299 crore, the plan was to change the lines from DC to AC from Igatpuri and Pune towards CST. The project has progressed till Thane at a cost of Rs910 crore and on the 5th and 6th lines — used by long-distance trains-between Thane and Kurla LTT. The lines left to be converted from DC to AC are Thane to CST and the Harbour line. The deadline to complete all these lines — except Harbour line — was March 2014 which was then pushed back first to August and then to December.
