The Kanchanjanga Express, which was traveling from Agartala to Sealdah, was hit from behind by the goods train despite a signal being given. The goods train driver allegedly ignored the signal, leading to the collision.

गिर गए और उनमें दहशत फैल गई। यह घटना पश्चिम बंगाल में 17 जून को हुई एक इसी तरह की घटना के बाद आई है, जिसमें एक मालगाड़ी ने कंचनजंगा एक्सप्रेस से टक्कर मार दी थी, जिससे 15 लोगों की मौत और 60 लोग घायल हो गए थे। अगरतला से सियालदह जा रही कंचनजंगा एक्सप्रेस के पीछे से मालगाड़ी घुस गई थी, भले ही सिग्नल दिया गया था। मालगाड़ी के चालक ने सिग्नल को अनदेखा किया था, जिससे टक्कर हो गई थी।
