Namma Metro plans to float tender for ‘semi-naming rights’

The Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) is introducing semi-naming rights for existing metro stations, allowing sponsors to add their name as a prefix. Previously, this policy only applied to new stations. The decision comes after the BMRCL board and the state government approved the tender for these rights. This policy...

allows private companies to contribute financially towards the construction and maintenance of metro stations, like Infosys's contribution to the Electronic City station, and in return, their name is added as a prefix to the station. This policy is not unique to Bengaluru, with other cities like Delhi and Mumbai also employing similar practices. Some commuters support the policy, seeing it as a beneficial arrangement for both the company and the public, while others are opposed, believing private corporations should not have a say in public infrastructure naming. There are concerns regarding the potential for companies to back out on promises, as seen with the Embassy Group's commitment to the Bettahalasur Metro Station. This policy raises questions about the responsibility of the BMRCL to ensure companies fulfill their commitments and maintain a balance between private funding and public interest.

Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) abhi existing metro stations pe semi-naming rights dene ka faisla kiya hai. Isme sponsors apna naam station ke naam ke aage laga sakte hain. Pehle yeh policy sirf new stations ke liye tha. BMRCL board aur state government ke approval ke baad yeh tender float...

kiya jaayega. Is policy se private companies metro stations ke construction aur maintenance ke liye paise de sakte hain. Jaise Infosys ne Electronic City station ke liye paise diye aur uske baad station ka naam 'Infosys Foundation-Konappana Agrahara Metro Station' rakha gaya. Yeh policy sirf Bengaluru mein nahi hai, Delhi aur Mumbai jaise aur bhi cities mein bhi aisa hota hai. Kuch commuters is policy ko support karte hain aur yeh unhe ek win-win situation lagta hai, lekin kuch commuters iske khilaf hain aur unhe lagta hai ki private corporations ko public infrastructure ka naam rakhne ka haq nahi hona chahiye. Kuch cases mein, jaise Embassy Group ne Bettahalasur Metro Station ke liye paise dene ka waada kiya tha, lekin baad mein unhone apna promise break kar diya, isse yeh sawaal uthta hai ki kya BMRCL companies ke promise fulfill karne ki jimmedari leti hai aur kya private funding aur public interest ke beech balance maintain kiya jaata hai.

These days, every other day, we are getting requests from members to allow email login to their FB-based IRI account. 10 years ago, we had given the option for users to login through FaceBook - in retrospect, this was a mistake. These days, apparently, users are quitting FaceBook in droves because...
